Informatics Service
ODB is committed to developing a variety of informatics services, converting numerous valuable marine research resources into convenient Web APPs. These services include BioViewer and Eco API integrating with our databases, online articles Zooplankton Species Overview providing an introduction to zooplankton and a querying APP designed for copepod classification Key to the Calanoid of Copepods in collaboration with academia. Also, a project to develop deep-sea image identification technology with BIIGLE has made good progress in recent years. We welcome everyone to explore marine life surrounding Taiwan using our various informatics services. If you have any feedback, please feel free to share with us!
💡If you wish to cite our informatics service, please follow the ODB citation guide.
BioViewer is based on the core Bio-Ocean Database and integrates related services including Key to the Calanoid Copepods, Zooplankton Species Overview, and Hidy Viewer. It also provides a user-friendly search system supporting both scientific and common names, enabling users to search, view, and download data through a single platform, as well as link to various external resources.
The Eco API provides access to biological occurrence data and microplastic data from our databases, querying regional species checklists, calculating regional species composition, and more. The taxon search feature allows you to search by scientific name / Chinese common name (TaiCOL) / foreign common name (WoRMS), making it easy to find interested taxon easily.
💡You can also query the ocuurence data in the ODB integrated service Hidy Viewer and Ocean APIverse.
We collaborated with marine taxonomist Dr. Chang-Tai Shih to compile his books CALANOID COPEPODS OF CHINA SEAS and KEY TO THE GENERA OF CALANOID COPEPODS, as an interactive Web APP designed for querying classification keys of Calanoid copepods. This app comprises over 1,000 scientific illustrations featuring detailed taxonomic characteristics provided by Dr. Shih, which serves as a valuable resource to understand the classification of Calanoid copepods. It encompasses species found in the waters surrounding Taiwan, including the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea covering 30 families, 101 genera, and 576 species of Calanoid copepods.
💡You can also query the classification key of Calanoid Copepods in the ODB integrated service Ocean APIverse.
The book Taxon and Distribution of Zooplankton in the Waters Around Taiwan and the Northern South China Sea vol. 1, which was co-edited by Professors Jiang-Shiou Hwang, Qing-Chao Chen, and Min-Ben Chen, covers information on the geographical distribution, morphology, and ecological habits of 163 species of common zooplankton from 45 families in the waters surrounding Taiwan. The authors have granted authorization and provided the content of this book for application by ODB. We compiled these valuable resources into online articles for the convenience of public access and academic dissemination.
ODB has set up a BIIGLE server through the open source project. Also, we organized a "Seafloor Image Identification Working Group" to work on it. The working group has established a standard operating process for deep-sea image identification and completed the identification of more than 8,000 seafloor images. You are welcome to log in ODB BIIGLE server to try it out or browse our identified images through the guest account provided below. Additionally, you can also check out the ODB Newsletter or working group's document. Feel free to contact us for more details.
